Keynote Speakers

Vânia Gonçalves completed a joint-doctoral degree in Digital Media (University of Porto) and  in Media and Communication Studies (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) on the convergence of Future Internet and Online Video. Her research is focused on the interplay between technology, business and policy, in particular in the media and digital sectors.  

Vânia is currently a researcher at INESC TEC, Invited Assistant Professor at FEUP/U.Porto and Science and Technology Manager at U.Porto Media Innovation Labs, a Competence Center in the Media domain. She is also na independent consultant in the areas of 5G and digital media and na H2020 expert evaluator.        

She previously worked at imec-SMIT (formerly iMinds), Vrije Universiteit Brussel, conducting research on business model analysis and policy issues surrounding media and ICT, with particular focus on mobile communication markets and spectrum management. She has been involved in several Belgian and European FP7 projects  related to 4G, cognitive radio systems, self-organising networks, wireless sensor networks, cloud computing platforms and mobile operator service platforms. She has also coordinated R&D activities at NMusic, an SME providing B2B media streaming platforms, and has been involved in H2020 projects dealing with Big Data and Media.

Before that, she held positions at the European Commission, DG Information Society, NOS Sistemas (formerly Mainroad) and technical responsibilities at the University of Porto.

Joana Resende holds a PhD in Economics and Management Science from the Université Catholique de Louvain. She is an Assistant Professor at the FEP, University of Porto, where she teaches several courses in the areas of Microeconomics, Industrial Organization and Research Methods. She is a researcher of cef-up (Centro de Economia e Finanças da Universidade do Porto), being appointed research director of the Theory and Methods group in 2017. She has a vast experience with national and internationally funded projects, covering a variety of topics, such as:

– Digital economics: business model innovation and competition dynamics in digital age, optimal pricing in network industries and two-sided markets;

– Energy markets: wholesale and retail market design, economic regulation and retail market liberalization, innovation and distributed generation systems.

Her research has been published in academic journals such as Energy, Marketing Science, International Journal of Industrial Organization, Journal of Public Economic Theory, Journal of Mathematical Economics, or Information, Economics and Policy.
